I am a jeweller who loves to make really unusual pieces which are bespoke for each individual client. However sometimes you don’t always get the opportunity to make those really fun, exciting and challenging pieces as you get bogged down with running your business.
Making commercial “bread and butter” pieces for shops and galleries is good to make a living but I also love to make one off statement pieces like my original degree show pieces such as
this large statement oxidised silver neckpiece with large kinetic Rutile Quartz stone. The stone can slide up and down the piece. And these 3 sculptural rings.
Making these sculptural rings is a really challenging process. I really enjoy selecting unusual stones which have character, then design around the stone itself to create something totally unique and set the stone in an unusual way.
So I was over the moon when a client commissioned me to make her a one off ring with one of my unusual stones. She chose a Dendritic Quartz which has moss/fern like inclusions (which are actually called dendrils hence the name dendritic quartz) within the crystal as it forms. Each stone is like an unusual picture on it’s own and is totally unique. My client had seen a previous ring I had made with this stone on an old business card and wanted one made for herself.
Here are images of work in progress of the ring with the individual pieces of silver and a finished sculptural ring to show you how one looks.
The second image is of the layered up pieces to create the sculptural piece. The next stage is to solder all the sections together then make the claws, clean up and polish, send off for hallmarking, then finally set the stone.
Here are images of the finished piece.
If you would like to commission a sculptural ring with an unusual stone get in touch. I have lots of really nice stones including, green amethyst, rutile/ tourmalinated/ dendritic/ smoky quartz. Contact me to see what can be made.
